Physical Education and Sports

Knowles Primary School strives to provide children with high quality physical education enabling pupils to develop fitness, social and thinking skills. Children are given two hours of high quality PE in curriculum time and are offered a range of opportunities through lunch time and after school clubs. All year groups will be taught one hour of indoor sport either dance or gymnastics, and one hour of outdoor games.

Key Stage 1 pupils focus on acquiring the fundamentals; agility, balance and co-ordination, as well as an understanding of sustaining health and mastering basic skills. Key Stage 2 children build on their experiences, progressing to tactical thinking and teamwork to face the challenging introduction of competitive sport. Pupils will be encouraged to self-evaluate and improve their own physical performances.

In school, children will learn about the six Olympic values: Excellence, Inspiration, Respect, Courage, Determination, Equality and Friendship. Pupils aim to demonstrate these values when taking part in sport, entering cross-school competitions, and in all aspects of school life.

Children are encouraged to enhance their skills by taking part in the sports festivals where they can compete against other schools across a variety of sports. Indoor hall and gym facilities are accessible for all year groups and outdoor adventure is encouraged through a trim trail and Forest Schools lessons.

Within the local community, pupils have the opportunity to develop confidence in water. Knowles works with the local leisure centre, using their swimming facilities to provide lessons. Parents are encouraged to be a part of the end of year sports day as well as to support their children throughout the year at festivals and local sports leagues which the school enters teams.
