At Knowles Primary School we believe reading is fundamental to lifelong learning.
Our aim is that all children will be able to read at an age appropriate level by the time they leave Year 2.
Learning letter sounds is an important first step and phonics sessions using ‘Letters and Sounds’ take place at 9.10 every morning for children in FS and KS1. Children in Foundation also use ‘Jolly Phonics’ to help them. Our phonics is supplemented by the use of ‘Phonics Bug’ (A reading scheme)
Alongside phonics children have regular guided reading sessions, where specific learning takes place. These sessions are supported by the PM and Oxford Reading Tree reading scheme. Children may also read other books banded at an appropriate level.
Children are expected to borrow a book from school graded at the appropriate level and to read this with an adult at home.
In Key Stage Two, children continue to have daily Spelling & Grammar sessions at 9:10 every morning. In guided reading sessions, children move on to use a selection of books from Oxford Reading Tree, Rigby Navigator and Bug Books
Additional support is available for children who may be at risk of not reaching an appropriate reading level. These include ‘Reading Recovery’ and ‘FFT Wave 3’, reading interventions for KS1 children and ‘Better Reading Partners’ in Key Stage Two.
Additional support is available for children who need support with phonics with our rapid phonics catch up interventions.
If you require any additional information please speak to your child’s class teacher.
